SYML GIRL

Following our recent interview with Seattle-based songwriter Brian Fennell, aka SYML, this talented individual is keeping in our view with a new music video for ‘Girl’. As with so many of his singles on the album, ‘Girl’ is imbued with organic textures and an appreciation for life, which comes directly from his own personal experience. Here Fennell shares the backstory for ‘Girl’: Luckily, we caught it at a good time so her development was still on track up to that point and we did a surgery in time to allow her to have a healthy, full normal life. The build up leading up to that surgery was the most intense thing that my wife and I and our family had ever been through.” As we discussed in the aforementioned interview, the very reason that SYML first began writing songs was to cope with the death of a close friend, and so this cathartic process came naturally. The video, directed by Hayley Young, is a fittingly simple tale of a young girl discovering the world around her, with it’s places and people; joys and sorrows; mishaps and amends. If you’ve been enjoying tracks like ‘Where’s My Love’ and ‘The Bird’, then look out for SYML’s European headline tour, which begins September 11 in Vienna, Austria, and includes stops in Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, France and culminates in London, UK at the Scala on October 29th. - Hannah Thacker
